Should I Paint or do Flooring First?

A common question for homeowners making improvements in their home is "should I paint or do the flooring first?". Here are a few things to consider:

Flooring and new interior paint are tasks that are often done in conjunction with each other.

Painting can be done either before or after new flooring is installed; there are pros and cons to both and typically painting is done last.

If painting is done first, the following could occur with the new flooring install:

- The flooring installer could scratch or “ding” the newly painted baseboards, requiring "touch-up" painting to be needed after the install.

- The new flooring could be thinner the old flooring, thus showing a line where painted.

If painting is done after the new flooring, the following could occur with the painting:

- New paint could be spilled or dripped on the new flooring.

- This point should not be an issue if proper set up techniques are taken, and the paint is applied by a professional painting firm.

Mark was our crew lead and the team performed a number of exterior wood repairs, a door re-stain, interior and exterior painting. Mark clearly takes a lot of pride in his work and went above and beyond to ensure the work was high-quality, including finding exact matching siding to fix dry rot, and performing minor repairs that weren't even included in the quote.
